New study reveals growing activity in self-archiving

KPL's newest study on open access follows up on our previous one on open access journals (the 'gold road' to open access) and this time looked at self-archiving (the 'green road'). Almost half the respondents are now self-archiving their research articles in some way - on their web page, in institutional repositories or in subject-based archives like the physics arXiv, and the proportion of them doing this is rising. Most, however, remain largely ignorant of the impact of their own work, and over 30% are still unaware of the possibility of providing open access to their work by self-archiving. Nonetheless, 81% would willingly self-archive their articles if required to do so by their employer or funder and a further 13% would do so reluctantly. Only 5% would not comply with such a request.

Emerging Markets
Big opportunities in the developing Chinese market

Although the rapidly developing Chinese market is believed by many publishers to offer a very attractive opportunity to build market share and revenue, relatively little is known about the opinions of Chinese academics towards scholarly journals published in the West. Supported by the Publishers Association and a syndicate of seven leading STM publishers, Key Perspectives has recently completed a survey of 500 Chinese academics representing universities across China. The report provides a timely and detailed insight into this exciting market and is available from the Publishers Association by following this link:
